Take a deep breath; this is a networking opportunity, and although you may feel like the only nerve-rattled individual in the room, trust in the fact that you’re not, by a long shot. Most employers and job-seekers commonly experience this type of anxiety before speaking to groups of strangers at networking events. Luckily, there are several tips and suggestions that can assist you, and even some of the shyest individuals out there, in working a room like a professional. Embrace Nonverbal Communication While modern networking has largely become a figment of social media, there are still certain benefits of face-to-face interaction with professional contacts that, believe it or not, are worth the few hours of nervousness. Dan Klamm, Outreach Marketing Coordinator at Syracuse University Career Services, wrote in an article on social networking that “in-person meetings allow you to build stronger relationships than back-and-forth messaging online. Things like body language, eye contact, and tone of voice are all essential in helping to establish rapport and build a bond,” Klamm said. Klamm is correct in stating that body language plays an important role in the networking process, considering the fact that nonverbal language constitutes nearly 55 percent of our communications. There are several basic movements to consider while approaching and conversing with others, with some of the most important falling on eye contact and arm placement. Eye Contact According to Conversation Aid, eye contact should follow the 50/70 Rule, which states an individual should maintain eye contact 50 percent of the time while speaking, and 70 percent of the time while listening, and to also be mindful of glancing habits. when you do make eye contact, maintain it for four to five seconds, slowly glance to the side, and then look back again. This will break the illusion of staring. Remember to move your eyes slowly, and always to the side. If your eyes dart away quickly it makes you looks shy or nervous. If you look down it gives the appearance that you lack confidence. Arm Movements and Stance As with eye contact, arm movements dictate your level of interest in the conversation. Typically, folded arms give a do-not-approach, bored signal, while hands clasped behind the back indicate interest. The same is true of your stance; leaning or slouching is a sign of disinterest, while standing tall with shoulders back signals interest and confidence. Being aware of others stances at these events also comes in handy, especially when you are making the rounds of the roomlook for small groups of two to three individuals who are standing slightly facing outward toward the room, which is a sign that they are open and are welcoming more people to join. Keep Moving and Have a Goal Set a goal for yourself, such as having one solid conversation or asking for one introduction, and create a game plan with concrete steps to get you there,” said  Nancy Ancowitz, USA-based author of Self-Promotion for Introverts: The Quiet Guide to Getting Ahead. This also helps to take your mind off of the fact that youre meeting important people, and instead turns your focus to accomplishing something. This then allows for less awkward moments, as youre moving around often and building solid conversations based on your goals before you go. By remaining with one person or group for only about 10 to 12 minutes apiece, you also take desperation out of the equation. A confident individual meets and greets everyone with the same amount of kindness and interest, but does not linger in hopes of an offer or to try to sell themselves. Neediness will only drive a wedge between you and the other person. Dont Make Everything About You This is a common mistake made by many at networking events, and it is one easily fallen into, since networking is supposed to be about showing what you have to offer to potential contacts and employers, right? Wrong. While it is important, as mentioned above, to have a goal in place while making the rounds, it is equally important to not make that goal about simply selling yourself. Howard Adamsky, author of  Hiring and Retaining Top IT Professionals/The Guide for Savvy Hiring Managers and Job Hunters Alike, said he developed an elevator speech that lasts thirty to forty seconds at the most. When asked, I tell people I am a writer, consultant, and public speaker who works with organizations to support growth in different areas, Adamsky said. If they want more, I answer their questions, but I never give them a 30-minute lecture. Neither should you. With that being said, it is beneficial to ask the other person questions about themselves, and even to stray away from strict vocational talk if the conversation allows. I, for one, am a fanatic motorcyclist, and this has generated more interest than the new book I just wrote, Adamsky said. Remember, relationships are more important than trying to tell everyone in the room what you do. This also plants you as an avid listener in your contacts mind, and since true listeners are very rare individuals nowadays, you will be remembered as someone who made him or her feel special someone who wasnt just there to get a job. Follow Up Youve shook hands, swapped business cards, offered to refill drinks and now youre wondering what to do with all your newfound connections. Dr. Carleen Eaton is a graduate of the UCLASchool of Medicine with nine years of experience in admissions advising. She has helped hundreds of medical school applicants get into their desired programs over the years and has frequently been a guest speaker at various colleges and universities on the subject. Dr. Eaton is the founder of PreHealthAdvising.com, an admissions consulting firm dedicated to assisting students in the medical school application process. She is currently working on her book, Getting into Medical School For Dummies, an installment of the popular series that will be released in May 2013. VT: How much time should be set aside to adequately prepare for and complete a Med School application? Carleen: Some steps should be started at least six months prior to the opening of the admissions cycle. These include researching schools, reading about the application process, and determining whom to ask for letters of recommendation. When it comes to filling out the primary application, the single most time-consuming task is writing the personal statement. Crafting an effective, compelling statement usually takes more than a month. Exactly how far in advance of the submission date an applicant needs to start work on the application depends on how many other things theyre juggling. For example, if an applicant is balancing a full load of classes, extracurricular activities, and MCAT studying, they need to begin working on the application many months in advance in order to spread out their workload. VT: What is the single most important thing applicants should focus on with this application? Carleen: Although every part of the application is important, when it comes to the primary application, the personal statement is crucial. The personal statement allows an applicant to tell his or her story and is an opportunity to let the committee know who they are beyond academic accomplishments and extracurricular activities. A strong personal statement wont make up for a weak GPA or subpar MCAT score, but if an applicant has solid academic credentials, the personal statement can help him or her distinguish themselves from other applicants who are similarly qualified. VT: What are the biggest mistakes one can make on a Med School application? Carleen: A major, and avoidable, mistake applicants make is submitting an application late in the cycle. Most medical school use rolling admissions, which means that they review applications as they are received, rather than waiting until the application deadline to begin their review. Earlier applicants have a much greater potential to receive an interview while there are still plenty of seats open in the class. As the cycle progresses and seats in the class are filled, applicants are competing for fewer slots and may even be interviewing for a place on the waitlist because the class is already full. Applicants should aim to complete every step of the application process - primary, secondary, and interview - as early as possible in order to maximize their chance of admission. VT: What do Med School admissions officers look for most in an applicants essays/personal statements? Carleen: Admissions committees are looking for applicants who are highly motivated to pursue a career in medicine, who have explored the field thoroughly, and who possess the compassion, drive, interpersonal skills and personal qualities needed to become a great physician The most effective way to convey ones message through the personal statement is to follow the tried-and-true advice to show dont tell by using details and examples to convey ones points rather than relying solely on direct explanation. VT: Is there anything on a students application that would automatically disqualify them from being considered for the program? Carleen: Because most schools receive thousands of applications, many schools do an initial screening based on MCAT scores and GPA. Only those applicants with MCAT scores and GPAs that are above a given threshold may receive a full review and consideration for an interview offer. The admissions process differs from school to school, and some schools do a holistic review of all applications; however, applicants with a low GPA and/or MCAT score may find themselves unable to get beyond the initial stage of the application process at many schools. VT: What about the Med School admissions process differs the most from undergraduate admissions? Carleen: The admissions process to medical school has a much longer timeline than undergraduate admissions. An applicant who plans attend medical school directly after college will submit their application the summer after their junior year in college. After the primary application comes supplemental or secondary applications and then interviews. Although most interviews are conducted from September through January, some schools continue interviewing into March or even early April, which results in a process that can take close to a year from start to finish. VT: What undergrad majors best prepare one for med school applications? Carleen: A premedical student can choose any major as long as they complete the prerequisite coursework for medical school. In addition to core science classes that are required for admission to medical school, many schools have a list of additional, recommended science classes that they prefer for students to take prior to entering medical school. It is much easier for a science major to work these courses into their schedules because they often overlap with courses that are required for graduation in that major. Therefore, non-science majors can be at a disadvantage because they tend to have fewer of these recommended courses and less depth in their science coursework. At the same time, being an art history, Spanish, or political science major, for example, will help an applicant to stand out among the sea of biological science majors, which can provide an advantage in the application process. VT: Is there anything you might see on a students application that would quickly put them ahead in the running? Carleen: A high MCAT score. The importance of the MCAT cannot be overstated, although even a student with a great MCAT score may not be admitted if he or she lacks clinical experience or has other deficiencies in the application. If an applicant scores in the mid-thirties or above and has an otherwise strong application he or she is in the running for top-tier schools. VT: What advice do you have regarding MCAT test prep? Carleen: I recommend integrating practice questions into ones study routine very early on. This is more effective than spending months reading and memorizing, saving practice questions until the last few weeks before test day. Also, test-takers should focus on their weakest areas first. These are the subjects that they have the most room to improve on, and although its more enjoyable to study a subject one is good at, the area that one has most difficulty with is the one they should invest the most time in. Finally, dont overlook Verbal Reasoning! Schools take the score on this section seriously, but the temptation for many students is to spend most of their time studying for the science sections to the detriment of Verbal Reasoning. VT: What do Med School admissions officers look for in recommendation letters? Carleen: Admissions officers want to see evidence that the person writing the letter knows an applicant well enough to give a meaningful evaluation. The letter should state the capacity in which the writer knows an applicant and use concrete examples to illustrate the applicants personal qualities, problem-solving abilities, maturity, and other characteristics important for a future physician. Ideally, a letter of recommendation will also provide information that gives the committee an understanding of how the applicant performed compared to his or her peers in the setting within which the evaluator worked with the applicant. Brazil isn’t one of the cheapest countries in South America and generally, you’ll spend around £30 on accommodation, food, and activities. There are 5 main things that you’ll need to budget for:FlightsAccommodationFoodAttractionsTransportFlightsOn average, return flights can cost around £700 but it’ll depend entirely on when you go.  We recommend that you get your flights at least 3 months in advance and use sites like Skyscanner or Google Flights.AccommodationAccommodation will probably be your second biggest expense after the flights. The rates can vary wildly and at certain times of the year, be as expensive as in cities like New York or Paris. You can also save some money by staying in youth hostels, budget hotels, or Airbnbs.Work out your budget per night and use sites like Booking.com, Hotels.com, and Airbnb.To help you better understand the Brazilians, why not get Portuguese lessons?FoodTravelling is a great way to learn about Brazilian culture through food: açai berry purée, bolinhos de aipim, moqueca (a Brazilian Amazonian fish stew), vatapa, and plenty of fresh fruit. The botanical gardens cost under £4 and there are plenty of free attractions around the city. You’ll need to pay around £3 for a ferry to Ilha Grande. Our advice is to get your tickets ahead of time so that you won’t have to wait in a queue to get them.With Copacabana beach, Ipanema beach, and plenty of other natural wonders on Brazil's marvellous coastline, there are plenty of things to see and do.TransportPublic transport in Rio isn’t great. Buses aren’t very reliable so it’s probably best to avoid them. The metro is more reliable but it only runs in the centre and south of the city down to Ipanema. Taxis are more affordable and sa fer at night.  We recommend getting the 99pop app so that you can save around 20% on your taxi.Accommodation in Rio de JaneiroRio’s reputation as a dangerous city is hard to shake. In one respect, this is true and you should be careful and opt for travelling by taxi at night. Similarly, don’t leave valuable items on display and avoid unsafe neighbourhoods. The locals are also very concerned about pickpockets and thieves and will know the city better than you. Don’t let this put you off, though, as there are plenty of safe places in Rio and if you’re careful, you’ll be fine.Some of the safest areas are Urca, Ipanema, and Leblon. Copacabana, as a popular tourist destination, is also a popular destination for pickpockets. In Santa Teresa, you don’t need to worry too much as long as you aren’t walking around the city centre late at night.Anyway, let's look at accommodation in Rio.Hotels in RioThe cost of hotels in Rio will depend on the type of hotel and where it is. There are a lot of high-end hotels in Rio but they tend to be cheaper than they’d be in the UK.You can expect to pay between £40 and £80 a night for a double room with breakfast included in 3- and 4-star hotels. You can e ven get ocean views or a pool.Youth HostelsYouth hostels are popping up all over Rio and there are plenty of them all over the city, especially in Copacabana.  If you’re travelling alone, this is a good way to meet people.  You can pay between £7 and £15 a night for a bed in a dorm with breakfast included.Airbnbs in RioYou could also choose to rent a flat in Rio. Airbnb allows you to rent a room and rub shoulders with the locals or an entire property to yourself.  Again, the rates will vary on when and where you go but you can get studio apartments for as little as £20 a night in Santa Teresa.The Best Time to Visit Brazil’s Second CityRio has a humid tropical climate and it’s generally quite warm and humid throughout the year. Like most tropical countries, there are two main seasons: the dry period and the rainy period. During the Carnaval, Rio is incredibly busy! (Source: 489327)The dry period, between October and December, is the best time to discover Rio, but you can also go between March and May if you don’t like the heat (with temperatures around 25 °C) and want to avoid the rain and storms.Carnaval takes place during the rainy season and is usually in February or March depending on the year. During the rainy season, temperatures can exceed 35 °C and it rains regularly.However, it doesn’t usually rain for the entire day and if you just have to see the carnival, then you’re going to have to deal with the rain.You’ll need at least 4 days to enjoy the different areas of Rio.
